Language Acquisition Under Different Conditions

I attended a digital lecture a while back titled "Språkinlärning på olika villkor" (Language Acquisition Under Different Conditions), delivered by Annika Andersson, a university lecturer in Swedish as a Second Language at Linnaeus University. I want to share some interesting findings from her research.

Early phonetic acquisition

Up to the age of six months, infants can distinguish advanced phonetic differences across any language. From six to twelve months, this ability narrows to the sounds of their first language or languages. This has practical implications for learners of all backgrounds — it explains, for example, why distinguishing certain sounds in a new language (such as the Swedish sje-sounds) can be genuinely difficult, and why learners should not be too hard on themselves. It also highlights that hearing impairments during the first year of life can have lasting consequences for language acquisition throughout a person's life.

Multilingualism and prior language knowledge

Being able to use your first language when learning a new language improves outcomes. Being multilingual also increases your capacity to acquire further languages. Socioeconomic factors play a significant role too — they can determine how far a learner is able to develop both in a new language and in their first language.

What I found particularly compelling is just how deep this first-language influence runs - not just in how we speak, but in how our brains process a new language in real time. Andersson and her colleague Marianne Gullberg at Lund University published a study on this in Frontiers in Psychology in 2022, measuring brain responses in English and German learners of Swedish using EEG while participants listened to Swedish placement verbs - words like sätta, ställa, and lägga, which all roughly translate to "put" in English but carry very specific meanings depending on the shape and orientation of the object being placed. Swedish, like German, requires you to make these fine-grained distinctions. English does not — "put" covers everything.

The results were striking. German learners, whose language already makes somewhat similar distinctions, showed brain response patterns much closer to native Swedish speakers than English learners did. English learners showed a qualitatively different neural response altogether — not just weaker, but different in kind. This suggests that your first language doesn't just give you a head start with vocabulary or grammar. It actually shapes the cognitive pathways through which you process meaning in a second language. And this showed up even when the two learner groups were matched on proficiency, age, and years of exposure. Surface proficiency and deeper semantic processing, in other words, are not the same thing.

Effective teaching approaches

In terms of direct instruction, Andersson highlighted the value of child-directed speech, a slower, comfortable pace with deliberate pauses - as well as the technique of reflecting a student's answer, either repeating or rephrasing it. She also stressed that quality of language input is essential when quantity is limited, while quantity of exposure matters equally when quality is high.

The research also points to some specific practices worth noting. Deliberately planning time for conversation — not as a spontaneous add-on but as a scheduled activity where the teacher's only job in that moment is to talk with a child - turned out to matter more than expected. Vocabulary work grounded in real situations also proved more effective than decontextualised word lists: finding out exactly what words a child needs to join a game of football or participate in a role-play corner, then teaching those words before the child needs them.

Motivation and the home environment

When it comes to learning Swedish specifically, Andersson pointed to the role of parental attitudes. Whether parents are making an effort to learn the language, whether they already speak it, and whether they consider it important, all of these factors directly influence a child's motivation.

She and colleagues tested this in a two-year research and development project called Moroten, run in collaboration with preschools in Karlskrona and published in a 2026 volume on practice-based research. Many multilingual children in those preschools showed low motivation to use Swedish, and in some groups, English had become the default social language, driven largely by YouTube, games, and streaming. The project worked on three fronts simultaneously: building staff knowledge in language acquisition, developing specific classroom activities, and bringing parents into the process.

One particularly concrete tool was the twin book, the same picture book borrowed in two languages at once, read at preschool in Swedish and at home in the child's first language. Parents who found the written version difficult were encouraged to tell the story in their own words simply. Survey results across three time points showed meaningful increases in perceived motivation among children, but most consistently among parents regarding their children's learning. The motivation parents feel for their children turned out to be the strongest and most stable of all the factors measured. There is something important in that. Engagement does not have to start with the child.

This felt worth passing on. I really wish we could include the parents more directly in this work - the research makes a pretty strong case for it. Who should be the one to tell them about all this - you or me?
